I started playing the piano as a teenager in 1980, a gift instrument from a neighbour. My interest was captured when a school friend played a small piece of music to me. I was in awe of them and wanted to play like that too. So I taught myself to play and later took classical piano lessons and my first exam in 1982.
Since then I have continued playing piano music throughout the years and developed my skill with more exams in classical piano and music theory. I have developed my musical interest in all genres of music but particularly easy listening, ballads, Disney and music from popular shows as well as jazz.
A friend asked me to teach her to play the piano and this gave me the confidence to start teaching others. Providing lessons has been rewarding, as I have seen students with no ability develop into competent players who are passionate about music, as I am. Many choose to take exams but others pursue lessons, just for leisure and personal fulfilment. Its been encouraging to see young and old light up as they reach their next milestone.
An excellent break came for me in 2005, when I took the courage to play the piano at a Restaurant in Radcliffe-Upon-Trent. The Manager heard me play and I was booked to play the piano on a regular basis at the weekends This led to playing at other piano venues in Nottingham. It’s just great to play music to a captive audience and see people respond in a positive way. This led to requests to play at special occasions which then naturally led to me developing my experience playing at weddings and corporate events over the last 7 years. It is really rewarding to share in someone’s special occasion and see the happiness on peoples faces.
Composing in recent years has also been of special interest to me and have written and recorded music which I have shared with others. “Much Better Than That” and “White Flowers” being my personal favourites.
Its been nice to share my musical journey with you and thank you for taking the time to read my story.
